DC Launches Hero Project For Machinima

At WonderCon recently, James Robinson answered the oft-repeated rumors of his classic series Starman being adapted to television. And his answer boiled down to that we were lucky it hadn't happened, because the proposed scripts just weren't right.

Which makes the further announcements from Machinima today very interesting. For some reason, Starman is at the center of a DC Entertainment reality series of sorts.

Called Hero Project, it involves eight contestants competing "...in elimination challenges to develop a live-action short video based on their own interpretations of characters from DC Comics’ Starman comic book series. Well-known guest judges and celebrity special guests will join bestselling writer and DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns and a panel of esteemed judges to oversee the entire competition."

Machinima didn't give any further detail than that. So how does one get involved? What kind of challenges are these? We just don't know yet. But Starman is an incredibly well-loved series, if not necessarily well-known outside of fandom. Those eight contestants had better be superfans.

Those characters would include The Shade, The O'Dares (a family of cops that predates CBS' Blue Bloods by a decade or two), Solomon Grundy, and of course, Jack Knight. It's a great potential cast of characters.

If it works, it might also prove what fandom has been trying to say to Warner Entertainment for years: that the internet knows better than their movie division. I'm not saying we're right... I'm just saying.
